"TOO YOUNG!"
Debby Weissfinger thought these were the two nastiest words in the English language. Here she was, eight years old already, and people were always telling her she was TOO YOUNG.
"Too young" to help whitewash the cellar; "too young" to ride the Ferris Wheel' "too young" for ice skates, and much "too young" to bake a shoo-fly pie. But Debby knew better, and in spite of many exciting and disastrous experiences, the day came when Debby was not "too young".
Because Mildred Jordan knows the Pennsylvania Dutch intimately she has succeeded in telling, with sympathy and understanding, a present-day story of a cheerful, hard-working farmer and his family and friends, as they work and play throughout the various seasons. The homely chores and simple pleasures assume new dignity and meaning as the story unfolds. Children will delight in little Debby and her "curly feeling"; they will chortle over noisy Jerry and his love of strange words, admire father for his uncompromising honesty and sense of fairness, and love mother for the twinkle in her eye and because she is—Mother.
The Shoo-Fly Pie is more than just a story. It is a part of the picture that is America and as such Mildred Jordan has made a definite contribution to children's literature.
This is the first book for children written by that well-known outstanding author of Apple in the Attic and One Red Rose Forever, Mildred Jordan.
