Many books have been written about Helen Keller; several have been written about Annie Sullivan Macy; but none of the books has presented as thorough a picture of Annie Sullivan’s early childhood as the reader will find in The Silent Storm.
The story of this unusual and dedicated woman is told with warmth and humor. The authors have taken care to include all the incidents — shameful as well as inspiring — which influenced Annie to become the resourceful person who was able to break through the wall of blindness, muteness, and deafness which imprisoned a seven-year-old girl named Helen Keller.
The story begins with Annie’s journey to the Tuscumbia, Alabama, to take care of the young Keller child. In flashbacks Annie remembers her childhood, which in its own way was as much of an affliction as Helen’s physical handicap. There are many futile attempts to reach Helen until finally one wonderful day all of Annie‘s efforts are realized and Helen understands.
The Silent Storm traces Annie’s work and companionship with Helen through college and culminates with Annie’s engagement to John Macy.
