Book Guide

Ivy was the only orphan at St. Agnes's who had no one to go to on Christmas Eve. But she pretended she had a grandmother, and she wished her wish very hard...

In the little market town of Aylesbury, Mrs. Jones, the policeman's wife, was wishing too, as she trimmed her tiny tree and decorated her house...

And Holly, a beautiful golden-haired, blue-eyed doll stood with arms outstretched in the toy-shop window, wishing to be bought...

It seemed impossible that so many wishes could ever come true, what with the horrid old stuffed owl making dire threats and Peter losing the shop key — but, as you will see, wishes sometimes do come true.

Rumer Godden—as you might expect—brings her story to a happy conclusion; and from one softly colored endpaper to the other, the ingredients are just right to make this lovely book a perfect Christmas confection for every little girl who loves dolls.

The Story of Holly & Ivy
Reviewed by Sherry Early
Such a sweet Christmas story, reminiscent of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl, but much more hopeful, The Story of Holly & Ivy is one of Rumer Godden’s doll stories. And it’s illustrated by the talented Caldecott-award winning author and illustrator, Barbara Cooney. I would recommend this picture book for girls, or boys, who love dolls and who enjoy gentle stories about wishes coming true.
