What kind of doll is a Sweet Patootie Doll? Why, a doll made out of a sweet potato, of course! Lucy made one on an end-of-winter day and loved her until she became a real Sweet Patootie Doll.
One afternoon, though, Lucy left her doll on a stump in the yard, and one after another the creatures of the woods, and then Old Houn' Dog himself, found her and planned to eat her for dinner. But Sweet Patootie's big brown smile somehow made each one of them lose his appetite. Sweet Patootie was smiling because she knew she wasn't for eating; she was for making a little girl glad.
Roger Duvoisin has caught all the charm and warmth of this litling story in his entrancing illustrations. Every little girl who reads the book and looks at the pictures will find herself wondering whether she might have a Sweet Patootie Doll too.
