Pierre was lonely, and he was often hungry. How he dreamed of roasting sausage over the open fire! So Pierre and his mother and father saved their money and bought a piglet. The piglet would grow fat and make fine sausage. Pierre named the piglet Marcel, and he took good care of his pet. The little boy was not lonely now, for Marcel was his friend.
In this charming and suspenseful story, which takes place in the Perigord region of France, Pierre learns some surprising facts about truffles. Knobby, brown mushroom-life truffles are hard to find because they grow underground, usually around the roots of oak trees. Truffles are used in French goose liver pate, world-famous pate de foie gras, as well as in many other delectable dishes. They are a rare and tasty treat! People love to eat truffles, and they will pay a lot of money for them, Pigs love to eat them, too, and they know how to find them and dig them up.
But what about Marcel? Will he be made into sausage? And how does he come to be called the Truffle Pig?
Children will love reading the story of Pierre and Marcel, and they will delight in Kurt Wiese's wonderfully expressive illustrations.
