Book Guide

Dutch life in our country has such striking picture-book possibilities, it is surprising that it has not been more widely used. Even younger children are fascinated by the idea that here in our own country were windmills and wooden shoes.

This charming and decorative picture book is partly in two colors, giving a suggestion of Delft blue tiles, partly in four colors. The story tells how Pieter and his sister came to New Amsterdam to live with Grandfather and Grandmother, how they lived, played and worked. Saint Nicholas comes over the rooftops as he did in Holland and in the spring tulips bloom in Grandmother's garden as they did in old Amsterdam. The text is simple so that it may be enjoyed by quite young children, yet the book may also be used to supplement America Builds Homes by the same author and artist.
