Here is a lively and lucid book about zero, a very special number in the decimal system.
Harry and Mindel Sitomer are experienced authors of mathematics books for young children, and they introduce the basic mathematics about zero in a meaningful way. They give historical background for the use of the numeral and its name, and they provide practical everyday applications for exploration of the subject.
We usually think of zero as meaning "nothing." Most often when we write it, zero is used to hold a place. In a numeral like 10 the zero means "no ones." Zero's function as a place holder is explained in this book.
But we also use zero as a starting point, as a break-even point, and as a separation point, and all these uses are discussed and illustrated here, too. We use zero in count-downs, profit and loss accounts, and reading thermometers among other places. Zero is NOT "nothing."
Careful, detailed illustrations by Richard Cuffari enhance the text.
