Girl With a Pen is a book not to be missed by Bronte fans. Making the story of Charlotte’s life into a fictional narrative while keeping the broad outlines and many of the details was a good choice on the part of a good author herself, Elisabeth Kyle. Ms. Kyle writes vividly and fluidly of Charlotte’s young adulthood and her rise to fame, telling the story of Charlotte Bronte’s growth as a person and as an author with understanding and an affinity for Charlotte and her sisters. Natalie Savage Carlson, author of The Family Under the Bridge, another story set at Christmas time, wrote five books in the Orpheline series about a family of French orphans who live in a castle south of Paris. Greyfriars Bobby (Adaptation)

I do recommend the book quite highly—with a couple of caveats. For those of you who don’t mind spoilers, the dog does NOT die, until the very end of the story when he has attained a good life and a good old age, for a dog. There is another heart-rending death, though, within the first few chapters of the book, the death of an old man, not of the dog. So, reader beware. Read the full review
